It's Monday night, which means (in the House o' Cats, anyway) Torchwood!

Well. The writing continues to be somewhat frustrating. Large leaps where I think we needed more - smaller scale, the scene where Gwen and Rhys's apartment is tossed, but larger scale, the end - why will Jasmine be the last chosen one? What's the reasoning for letting her go? Is it just to stop the faeries from killing people from now until the next time someone is chosen? That whole thing was weird, and I didn't understand what was happening.

But, we have Jack backstory, which is awesome. Exactly how long has Jack been on Earth this time around? At least a century, we're led to believe? Or, as Alex just asked - reading her own friends list - would the 1909 scene possibly be from his time as a Time Agent? That man has way too many possible time periods.

We were just talking, and so far, the speculation about what's going to happen is somehow a lot more interesting than what's actually gone on. Which isn't to say that what's gone on is bad - some things better than others - but I'm really desperate for a lot more character work. The Torchwood hub site has some fascinating little tidbits; added after this episode was an IM between Gwen, Owen, and Tosh, where the latter two badger Gwen to tell them what the real story was with Jack and Estelle. So, obviously, Owen and Tosh aren't blind - they're seeing weird things with Jack - but aside from the gossipy conversation around the lunch table a couple of episodes back, we haven't seen this. I really want to see more of them - and Ianto - character things, make this more of a real ensemble thing.

Another interesting little thing on the hub site is a blog entry - supposedly intercepted by Tosh - in which a gay boy named Peter talks about encountering Jack, several times. Interesting stuff, would have made a good episode, quite frankly! And Peter specifically mentions that Jack drinks water, not alcohol, which means that is, in fact, an important point. "Small Worlds" was, in fact, the first time we saw Jack drink alcohol in this series. What does it mean? Like I said, speculation is more interesting than what actually happened.

I am really enjoying this show still. I like the potential, and I'm desperate to know what happened/is going to happen. I think, however, we're still waiting a bit for the writing staff to settle into the new characters - all the characters, really, since Jack is so very different than who we saw in DW. They're still finding their feet.

Bets please: how long until we're greeting with the completely obvious crossover fic? Alex and I are absolutely sure it will be all about how newly-immortal!Jack is emotionally healed by the love of, who else, the oldest immortal ever. Come on, you know the Jack/Methos fic is ALREADY BEING WRITTEN.

... though, Alex points out another crossover possibility. Now that Jack has apparently served in both world wars, he totally could have met comics-canon!Wolverine.

Play with us - what other fandoms should/will Torchwood be crossed with? Those stories you'd never ever write yourself, but would secretly devour with glee?

Unless I'm forgetting something, the only times we've seen Jack drink on TW and DW were both pretty significant moments -- Estelle's death and what he thought was about to be his. My theory is that Jack doesn't drink for fun, necessarily. He's got other ways to do that. He drinks when he means it, and I suspect he doesn't mess around with the cheap stuff.

This is, in fact, a paraphrased version of the first couple lines of a fic I'm going to write eventually, once I get a bit more evidence. Let's hope it sticks. ;)

This is true ... we have only seen him drink twice, total. I suspect Jack really likes being in control - possibly an after-effect of having two years of his life stripped from him. After that, you'd want to remember every moment, you'd think.

... oooooooooh, fic. ::looks hopeful:: ;)

There's an off-handed reference to a Fifth Doctor serial in here. Well, two, because another serial followed it up. The Mara. They're from "Kinda" and "Snakedance".

/end useless information.
